Only in by a few chapters, I'm already really liking this book. Praised as the novel that "prefigures" Suite Francaise -- the posthumous literary hit of 2005 -- this book unfolds a tale of forbidden love in France during the first half of the 20th century. It's also a story of class conflict, bourgeoise values, and war -- told by Irene Nemiroskvy who escaped the Bolsheviks, ended up at the Sorbonne in Paris, and was murdered at age 39 at Auschwitz.
